Hervé was a
Norman mercenary general in
Byzantine service during the
1050s. About
1050, he first appears as the leader of the Norman mercenaries under
Nicephorus Bryennius the Elder and one of the Greek's two chief lieutenants.
In
1057, Hervé rebelled against the
Emperor Michael VI and led his 300 Normans soldiers into eastern
Asia Minor to set up a state for himself. He entered into wars with
Armenia and the
Seljuk Turks. He was eventually captured in a war with the
emir of
Ahlat, Abu Nasr. He was shipped back to
Constantinople in chains, but there he was reconciled to the emperor and given the title of
stratilate in the army of
Isaac Comnenus.
